1 man dead, 1 wounded in Lake City shooting

A 20-year-old man is dead and another man was seriously injured in Lake City after someone opened fire on the parked vehicle the two were sitting in just before 2 a.m. Thursday, authorities said.
According to the Lake City Police Department, Christopher T. McConnell, 20, and Elijah D. Dunning, 48, were in a vehicle in front of 742 NW Alama Ave. at 1:45 a.m. when a man approached the vehicle and fired several shots into it.
Dunning drove them both to nearby UF Health Shands Lake Shore Hospital, where McConnell was unresponsive. Medical personnel were unable to save McConnell, who was pronounced dead a short time later, according to the police report.
Dunning was flown to UF Health Shands Hospital. His condition was unavailable Thursday morning.
LCPD officers, along with deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and representatives from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office responded to the scene, where it was determined that the suspect ran from the scene. K9 tracking teams from the Florida Department of Corrections and Florida Fish and Wildlife searched unsuccessfully for the shooter.
