Freshman point guard Kasey Hill is enrolled in Summer B and begins orientation this week, Florida assistant coach Matt McCall confirmed Monday.
But incoming freshman power forward Chris Walker is “still working toward things academically” and won't be enrolled, McCall said.
“Everything has to go through the NCAA Clearinghouse,” McCall said. “We should have more information later this summer, but right now he's continuing to work. The one thing I will say about Chris is he's committed to the process and he has really done an unbelievable job. We should know something more later on this summer.”
Walker's high school coach at Holmes County Bonifay, Poe White, said last week the 6-foot-10 forward took the ACT for the third time earlier this month and was enrolled in three online courses through the Florida Virtual School. Based on his current ACT score (64), Walker would need a 2.6 grade point average in core courses based on the NCAA's sliding scale of eligibility.
McCall filled in for Florida coach Billy Donovan on the Southeastern Conference men's summer basketball teleconference. Donovan is in the Czech Republic coaching the USA men's 19-under team in the FIBA World Championships.
Walker was expected to augment a Florida frontline next season that includes returning seniors Patric Young, Will Yeguete and Casey Prather and transfers Damontre Harris (South Carolina) and Dorian Finney-Smith (Virginia Tech). As of now, though, his future with the Gators hinges on if he can meet NCAA Initial Eligibility requirements to enroll when the fall semester starts in August.
Walker was named Florida's Class 1A player of the year last March, leading Bonifay to the state title. He averaged a triple-double (25 points, 14 rebounds, 10 blocks per game) in the state semifinal and final games.
Walker is the 12th-ranked prospect in the Class of 2013, according to ESPN.com's national recruiting rankings.
