A man was arrested late Sunday in connection with a shooting earlier that night that sent three people to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Mervyn Cotton, 20, was booked into the Marion County Jail just before midnight, charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was released three hours later after posting a $17,000 bond.

“He was identified by several witnesses as brandishing a gun and firing a gun during the incident. We do not know if his weapon was the one that injured the victims. There were reports of more than one shooter,” said Lt Billy Woods of the Ocala Police Department.

Initial reports were that up to four people had been shot.

It was just before 7 p.m. Sunday when gunfire erupted after a large group of people began fighting each other at the Spring Manor Apartments at 2833 NE Seventh St., according to police reports. It was still not clear Monday what spurred the confrontation.

David Prince, 19, was hit in the shoulder by a stray bullet as he sat on the couch in his second-story apartment.

“The bullet went through the wall, through the couch and struck him in the shoulder,” Woods said.

Prince was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center.

Javon Mosley, 25, and Adam Vareen, 24, also were injured during the melee. They were driven to the hospital by friends and relatives.

All three men were in stable condition Monday and none of their injuries were considered life-threatening, Woods said.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Ocala Police at 369-7000, the Crime Line at 369-7001 or Crime Stoppers at 368-7867.
