A Gainesville woman was charged with child neglect early Saturday morning after her two small children — who are said to have autism — were found wandering around unsupervised, according to an Alachua County Sheriff's Office arrest report.
Arrested was Deja Sade Mitchell, 24, of 807 Victoria Court in the Southwest 20th Avenue area.
A deputy responding to a child neglect report arrived about 2 a.m. and saw the children, ages 4 and 5, outside. The door was wide open and the children were walking around the property unsupervised, the report states.
A witness told the deputy that Mitchell left the home about 10 p.m. and had not returned.
The report states that authorities found dog feces and urine throughout the residence.
Mitchell arrived about 2:15 a.m. and told a deputy that her boyfriend was supposed to be watching the children. It was later learned that he was at work and was not scheduled to watch the kids, deputies said.
Under questioning by deputies, Mitchell eventually admitted leaving the children unsupervised, the report states. It adds that she told deputies the children have been diagnosed with autism and that no one wants to watch kids with special needs.
