No good excuse
Shame on the Alachua County Housing Authority for not stepping up to the plate for veterans. Allowing a $20 million grant available through the Veterans Administration to go by the wayside is a travesty.
All you had were excuses. There is no excuse good enough for what you allowed to happen. These people have given more than you will ever understand.
The money was available from the VA at no cost to the county. It would have provided just a small space to rest their bodies to heal from the wartime experiences they encountered.
The head of the Housing Authority should be admonished and fired for neglect. Where were the Alachua County commissioners? Isn't it time they exercised a little foresight or are there not enough veterans to help them get elected?
The failure to acquire VA funding for homeless vets desperately needing it highlights the limited vision and lack of compassion of our county leaders.
Joseph W. Donnelly,
I have noted an alarming trend by our media, and particularly by The Sun, to ignore important events that have molded our nation.
As William Lassiter observed (letter, June 17), the latest is a lack of mention of D-Day. There also was no mention of Flag Day.
There is another event that has received no attention by local media. It is the largest event of its kind: the annual Christmas Party at the VA hospital here in Gainesville, sponsored by the Freemasons.
These are not overlooked events, as adequate notification is always given to the media. It is more troubling that those special events, which are important to U.S. history and heritage, are deliberately neglected.
One must remember that those in uniform have protected and preserved our Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
I most strongly encourage The Sun and all media to remember this truth and feature articles and editorials recognizing our hallmark events and heritage.
Most lethal snake
Many thanks for the well-done articles on venomous snakes (June 9 and 13). My prayers are with young Ben Smith.
It was fortunate that only one fang penetrated, that a first-class treatment center was nearby and that its length and apparent slenderness suggest that this was a subadult snake.
Eastern diamondbacks commonly reach 6 feet and the probable record is close to 9. Because of fang length and volume of venom, they are the most lethal North American snake.
It's not hard to identify Florida's poisonous species. All but coral snakes have an easily seen pit between their eyes and nostrils (check out zoo or museum specimens). The corals differ, in part, from the similar scarlet, and scarlet king snakes, in having a black nose tip.
Please don't reflexively kill all snakes you see. They play an important part in environmental stability.
Thanks to the government, young girls can obtain birth control and the morning-after pill without parental consent. Children no longer need guidance from their parents because the government has become their parent.
The progressive left will not quit until God is taken out of everything we cherish in this country. They think we no longer need God because the government has become our god.
The current administration assumes it knows what is best for our children, and is doing its best to take God out of everything. Soon the progressive left will no longer see separation of church and state as a problem because the government is now replacing God and becoming the church.
It is tragic so many people are more concerned with what they can get for free than what is happening right in front of us to this great country.
