A large tree fell across West University Avenue late Wednesday night near the O’Connell Center, blocking all three eastbound lanes.

Eastbound traffic was being diverted north onto Northwest 22nd Street, said Gainesville police officers at the scene, who added that they got an alert of the tree having fallen at 11:09 p.m.

Police predicted crews would have the tree cut up and removed from the roadway by perhaps 1 a.m., but until then, eastbound traffic would continue to be diverted. Both lanes of westbound traffic on University continued to flow unimpeded.

The tree that fell was on UF property on the edge of the O’Connell Center parking lot and it fell across University Avenue across the street from UF Hillel, which is just west of the intersection of University and Gale Lemerand Drive. Police said there appeared to be no injuries or damage to vehicles as a result of the tree falling.
