Lane Ranger: Newberry Road just east of I-75 frustrates drivers

The area around the Interstate 75/Newberry Road interchange continues to be vexing for drivers.

Hill Bentley said the intersection of 69th Terrace and Newberry Road is dysfunctional because of traffic backups from area businesses, including a shopping center across from 69th Terrace on the south side of Newberry Road.

Cars turning right off 69th Terrace to go west on a green light are continually blocked or cut off by cars turning left out the shopping center that are often trying to cross three lanes to get to northbound I-75.

Meanwhile, some of the drivers turning right off 69th cross three lanes on Newberry Road to get to the southbound I-75 ramp.

“The vehicles illegally turning left into the path of vehicles legally turning right on green cause the traffic to stop and backup on NW 69th Terrace,” Bentley said in an email.

Some possible solutions are to put a left-turn signal in for traffic exiting the shopping center and/or place a flexible pole barrier along the left side of the far right westbound lane of Newberry road up to I-75 entrance ramp, Bentley said.

The area is under the jurisdiction of the Florida Department of Transportation.

District engineer Anthony J. (Tony) Falotico said one problem immediately spotted is a lack of pavement markings on the northbound exit from the shopping center. Falotico said he will check this week to see if it can be repainted.

“Once that is accomplished, we can add guidelines from the (northbound) left turn lane into the (westbound) inside lane to try to keep the left turners in their assigned lanes. I would like to point out that the (southbound) right turners from 67th Place need to stay in the outside lane of Newberry Road until such time as they can safely change lanes,” Falotico said.

Falotico added that adding a left turn signal is worthy of study.

“A left turn green arrow cannot be displayed without opposing traffic being in a red (stop) condition. I’m not sure if that would help or hinder current traffic flow, but it is a good suggestion worthy of further study,” Falotico said. “I will initiate a study to see if the change is feasible. It will be an in-depth study requiring a complete crash analysis, volume counts and computer modeling, so it will take awhile to complete.”
