A large contingent of Eastside High School classmates of the Class of 1973 along with peers from Gainesville High School, Newberry High School and P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School celebrated their 40th Class Reunion last weekend with dinner Saturday at Ocean Buffet at the Oaks Mall Plaza, followed by a church service on Sunday at Springhill Baptist Church. Class of 1973 students from Buchholz High School and Hawthorne High School were invited, but were unable to attend.

A short program during dinner featured remarks by reunion organizers, Maryann Lawson Jones of Eastside and Cynthia Jordan of Gainesville. Prayers were offered by Joe DeBose of Eastside and Jerome Jones of GHS.

Marna Weston, coordinator of the African-American History Project at the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida, delivered a brief presentation titled, "Untold story of school desegregation experiences from our generation."

Classmates who have passed on and those who could not attend because of illness were remembered. The program ended with the Eastside classmates reciting the school's alma mater.
