No one seemed more surprised about Jeff Driskel getting drafted by the Boston Red Sox than Jeff Driskel.
Florida's starting quarterback was out hunting at the time and did not find out until later from friends that he'd been drafted by the Red Sox in the 29th round Saturday.
Driskel tweeted his reaction: “Got drafted by the Red Sox today. Did not see that coming.”
Driskel was considered a potential major league prospect in high school, but has not played the sport since his junior season at Hagerty High in Oviedo. He missed his senior season to enroll early at UF. Driskel, an outfielder, batted .330 as a junior.
Former UF baseball player Brian Johnson, who is in the Boston organization, tweeted Driskel on Saturday, asking him if he planned to sign with the Red Sox. Driskel replied, “no sir lol.”
Driskel was wearing a big smile late Saturday afternoon. But it wasn't because Boston selected him late in the draft. It was because he bagged a wild hog while hunting with his girlfriend, UF cheerleader Tarin Moses.
