Chamber names Capital City Bank Small Business of the Year

Capital City Bank was recently named the 2013 Small Business of the Year by the Alachua Chamber of Commerce at the chamber's annual banquet at the Alachua Woman's Club. This distinction is awarded annually by the chamber to a local business that has shown broad support of chamber and community events and activities.

Lewis Oil recently announced the successful conclusion of the Alachua County Fuel Your School promotion. With the help of Chevron and Donorschoose.org, the Alachua County Fuel Your School promotion provided $39,702.90 in direct funding to Alachua County public school teachers. The results of the program are still being finalized, but more than 46 projects were funded through the promotion.

The North Central Florida Chapter of the Society of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters recently presented Meridian Behavioral Healthcare with a $22,000 check, the result of the local chapter's annual fundraiser held in April. This is the second year in a row that Meridian Behavioral Healthcare has been the chapter's “Charity of Choice” and the beneficiary of the annual fundraiser.

The Bread of the Mighty food bank recently announced that it received a $25,000 grant from Morgan Stanley to fund its BackPack Program, a child hunger initiative. The local award is the latest phase of Fill the Plate, Morgan Stanley's long-standing partnership with Feeding America.

Bread of the Mighty's BackPack program works through the Food4Kids Backpack Program of North Florida by putting nutritious food directly into the hands of children at risk of hunger by filling backpacks with packaged goods.

With this program, kids who usually get reduced-price or free lunch at school can get the nutrition they need even when they aren't in school over weekends or long breaks.

Best Western Plus Gateway Grand Hotel recently announced that it has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award. The accolade, which honors hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on the TripAdvisor website and is extended to qualifying businesses worldwide, with only the top performing 10 percent of businesses listed on TripAdvisor receiving the award.

The Capital City Bank Foundation recently awarded a $2,000 grant to Kids Count of Alachua County, a nonprofit that provides a free afterschool program for kindergarten through third-grade students in low-performing elementary schools in the county.
