CAMERON GUY, GAINESVILLE

Credentials

While becoming a state champion swimmer demands time in the pool, Cameron Guy has managed to keep his focus on the classroom. With four district titles and two regional medals to his name last season for the Hurricanes, Guy maintained a weighted 4.87 GPA as a junior in Gainesville High's rigorous Cambridge Program. Competing in three events at last year's state meet, Guy helped the Hurricanes finish third overall at the Class 2A Finals in Stuart with runner-up finishes in the 200-medley relay and 400-freestyle relay. He also swam to an 11th-place result in the 100 breaststroke after winning the District 4 title earlier in the postseason. Guy was a member of Gainesville's state champion 400-freestyle relay team during his sophomore season.

Personal notes

When he's not swimming for the Hurricanes, Guy competes for the Gator Swim Club and practices nine times per week for up to three hours. Guy said he wants to swim collegiately, but his first priority is academics. An aspiring pre-med student, he has begun application processes to Ivy League schools and is also looking at Duke, North Carolina and Virginia.

Quoteworthy

“There's days I have to be up at four (in the morning) and go to the pool. Then I have a break, I get breakfast and then I head to school. That goes until 2:40 (p.m.), then I have 30 minutes and I have to be in the pool again in the afternoon.” — Cameron Guy

GABY RUBEIS, BUCHHOLZ

Credentials

As a three-year starter for the Bobcats volleyball team, Gaby Rubeis culminated her senior season with a trip to the Class 7A state tournament and a commitment to play for the University of South Carolina. However, her achievements in the classroom were not to be overshadowed as Rubeis was also named one of 92 Academic All-Americans by PrepVolleyball.com this year with a 4.75 weighted GPA. A National Honor Society member, Rubeis finished in the top four percent of a graduating class of 515 students. On the court, the 5-foot-5 setter led Buchholz to a 25-6 record this season and was tabbed as The Sun's 2012 Big School Volleyball Player of the Year. Rubeis set up her teammates with an area-high 790 assists en route to the Bobcats' first state semifinals berth since 2007.

Personal notes

Rubeis chose to attend USC in the fall over scholarship offers from Cornell and Connecticut due to her close family connections to the Palmetto State. She plans on studying international business and will begin school in early July. “I've always wanted live there, and I always loved South Carolina,” Rubeis said. “They're campus is beautiful, and they're always so welcoming up there when I visited.”

Quoteworthy

“Time management. I think that helped us a lot having to juggle all this stuff at once. It really helped our stamina and determination to do well in all aspects.” — Gaby Rubeis
