Owned by David “RahRah” Daniel, the business moved to 3366 NW 13th St. in April from its former location at 1115 N. Main St., where it had been located since opening in April 2007.
Daniel said he is excited about the move, especially the addition of the mini-spa.
“This move definitely shows a little sign of growth,” Daniel said.
In the mini-spa, manicures and pedicures are provided by Mona Allison, the nail technician, and massages are done by Maxine Jones, who has been a state and nationally certified massage therapist for 16 years.
Jones said many people don’t know the benefits of getting regular massages and some people don’t know their insurance plans will help to pay for massages prescribed by doctors.
“I recommend that people in highly stressful jobs get them at least once or twice a week and that others get one at least every two months, and that is at the very least,” Jones said. “There are many health benefits to getting massages on a regular basis.”
The business also offers a 16-hour, two-day braiding Florida state certification course taught by Sheba Davis, a stylist at the salon. Davis said the course is for anyone 16 or older. The cost is $260. Davis is offering a group special for the next two months for $50 off each student’s fee for groups of four. She said those interested in taking the course should call 352-373-7323.
Daniel said the business was doing fine at its former location, but added that the new location is more upscale and will allow him to provide jobs to more people because it has more space.
“I wasn’t interested in moving because I was comfortable where I was, but this place found me,” said Daniel, adding that the new location represents the growth of the business.
Daniel has two other barbers and four stylists working with him now, but he is looking to hire more barbers and stylists.
Those currently working at the business with Daniel include barbers Ray Slater and Byron Wilson and stylists Deja Patterson, Bianca Rogers, Crystal Sumpter, Jessica Teasley and Davis.
Daniel emphasized that the staff at Coconuts can take care of the hair care needs of people of all cultures. “Between all of us, there is somebody here who can give anybody the kind of cut or hairstyle they want,” Daniel said.
The outside of the building is painted peach and trimmed in white, with about 20 parking spaces. Inside, there are 11 work stations spaced far apart on the first floor. The second floor houses the mini-spa.
A picture of the original Coconuts, a 20x40 square-foot hut in Daniel’s native St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, where he started honing his skills at the age of 16, hangs on the wall to the right of the receptionist’s desk near the front entrance of the business where Ashley Miles greets customers with a bright and friendly smile.
Daniel said his first location in the Virgin Islands was like being in elementary school, and his N. Main Street location, which was 1,100 square feet, was middle school, adding that his current location, which is 2,200 square feet, is like making it to high school.
He said the four palm trees at the entrance of his new location reminded him of the original Coconuts in St. Croix, which made him immediately fall in love with the location.
The atmosphere at Coconuts is mellow, soothing and family-friendly, said Teasley, 31, who specializes in everything from barbering to almost all aspects of cosmetology.
“It is very family oriented here, even though we all come from different walks of life, cultures and backgrounds,” Teasley said.
