This year, there is a desperate need for cheerleading coaches, who need to sign up as soon as possible in order to participate in upcoming training sessions.
Beverly Perry of the city recreation department said 21 is the age requirement for cheerleading head coaches. She also said other levels of coaching include student demonstrators, who must be 15, coach trainees, who must be 16 to 17, and assistant coaches, who must be 18 or older.
“We have 30 roster spots on each football team and 25 roster spots on each cheerleading squad,” said Dwright Jackson, recreation leader of the city of Gainesville’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs.
The regular cost for football is $91.50 for city residents and $146.75 for non-city residents. For cheerleading, it is $45.25 for city residents and $67.25 for non-city residents. To prove city resident status, parents must submit a copy of either a GRU bill or a voter registration card.
The fee for football will cover the use of standard football equipment such as jerseys, helmets and shoulder pads, which must be turned in at the end of the season. A parent packet will be provided to let parents know about additional required and suggested equipment.
The fee for cheerleading will cover the cost of uniforms, including vests, midriffs and skirts, which also must be returned at the end of the season. There will be additional costs for other apparel.
