Camps will offer variety of summer fun

Parents looking for summer camps for their children will have plenty of choices to suit their pocketbook and their child's interest.
And some camps even offer scholarships.
The camps included here consist of those offered by the city of Gainesville, Florida Museum of Natural History, Eastside Advocacy Group for Youth Inc., or EAGY, Upper Room Church of God in Christ, Woodland Park Boys & Girls Club, Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts at Studio Percussion, Star Center Children's Theatre and Santa Fe College.
The Rev. Karl "The Rev" Anderson, senior co-pastor of Upper Room, said the UR Fun! Summer Camp sponsored by the church will offer activities children and teens will enjoy. He said the children will receive mentoring enrichment, spiritual enlightenment and physical enhancement.
"What separates our camp from others is that it's faith-based and operates in a triangle. We focus on spirit, mind and body," Anderson said.
Beverly Perry, temporary support staff at the city of Gainesville, said the "Get Up, Get Out & Get Moving!" Summer camp will include lunch and snacks. She said the theme will be "Summer of Service," and the curriculum will focus on giving back, with campers also participating in a host of hands-on activities, sports, swimming, field trips and other activities.

City of Gainesville
The "Get Up, Get Out & Get Moving!" camp for students in first through sixth grade will be offered from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday at Eastside Recreation Center, 2841 E. University Ave.; Clarence R. Kelly Community Center, 1701 NE 8th Ave.; King Center, 1028 NE 14th St.; Porters Community Center, 512 SW 6th Ave., and the Albert "Ray" Massey Recreation Center, 1001 NW 34th St.
New this year will be four, two-week sessions plus a bonus one-week session running from June 17-Aug. 16. For city residents, the cost per session will be $90.50, or $45 with a scholarship and for non-city residents, $135.50, or $90.50 with a scholarship. The cost of the one-week bonus session will be $45.25, or $22.50 with scholarship for city residents and $90.50, or $45 with scholarship for non-city residents.
Limited scholarships will be available at all locations for children who have been approved for free or reduced lunch through their zoned school. Proof of eligibility is required and available by calling the Alachua County Public Schools food service office at 352-955-7540.
Registration and scholarship applications are available from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday at the Thomas Center, Third Floor, Building B at 306 NE 6th Ave.

The Eastside Advocacy Group for Youth camp, which will be called "Offering Every Child a Summer to Remember," for children in kindergarten through ninth-grade, will offer breakfast, lunch and snacks. Activities will include academics and computers, recreational activities, field trips, life skills, tennis lessons and other activities.
The camp will be offered from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday from June 10-Aug. 16 at the T.B. McPherson Recreation Center at 1717 SE 15th St. The cost is $35 per week for the first child, $30 per week for the second child and $25 per week for additional children.
EAGY was founded in 2011 to provide an opportunity for children in east Gainesville who were impacted by the closing of the Southeast Boys and Girls Club.

Florida Museum of Natural History campers will have an opportunity to investigate natural history through activities and hands-on exploration in any or all of the seven weeklong sessions. The camp is for children who will be in first through sixth-grade for the 2013-2014 school year.
The camp, which will run from June 10-Aug. 2 at the museum at SW 34th Street and Hull Road, will be offered in full-day and half-day sessions. The morning session will be held from 8:30 a.m.-noon, the afternoon sessions from 1-4:30 p.m. and the full-day sessions from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
The fee for half days will be $115 for members and $125 for non-members and for full days, it will be $220 for members and $245 for non-members. For field camps, the cost will be $265 for members and $295 for non-members.

Dance camps offered by the Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts with Howard Anderson and guest dancers will be offered in two-week sessions Monday-Friday from July 8-19 at Studio Percussion at 2512 NE 1st Blvd., Suite 500, located behind Big Lots on N. Main Street.
The morning session for ages 4-7 will run from 9 a.m.-noon and will offer the basics in ballet, jazz, modern dance and other dances. The afternoon session for ages 8-14 will run from 1-4 p.m. and will offer a more advanced level in ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop and other dances. The cost for both camps will be $149.

College for Kids
The Santa Fe College College for Kids program, which targets rising fifth- through ninth-graders, and is an academic program that will offer students challenging, fun, hands-on learning in topics ranging from art to math to science to computer skills. The camp will be offered in two sessions Monday through Thursday at the SF College northwest campus at 3000 NW 83rd St.
Session 1 will run from July 8-18 and Session 2 will run from July 22-Aug. 1. A full day of camp will be held from 8:15 a.m.-5:15 p.m., with half-day hours from 8 a.m.-12:20 p.m. or 2:35-5:15 p.m. Fees, which will include lab costs and a T-shirt, will be $318 per session for a full day and $159 for a half day.

Counselor in Training
The Santa Fe College counselor in training program, which will target rising 10th through 12th graders, will give teens an opportunity to assist instructors in the College for Kids program while earning volunteer hours they can use for their community service requirement.
The application deadline is May 31.
The counselor in training camp will be offered at the northwest campus at 3000 NW 83rd St. from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday in two sessions: Session 1 runs from July 8-18 and Session 2 runs from July 22-Aug. 1. The cost is $70 for a full-day, two-week camp session.

The Star Center Children's Theatre "Super Smart" Summer Arts Camp 2013, an award-winning children's arts and academic program for students in kindergarten through 11th grade, will offer violin, piano, dance, math and science classes.
Campers will have an opportunity to participate in a Broadway-style show. The camp also will sponsor a student recital and a science fair.
Classes will be held from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday from June 10-28 at The Actors' Warehouse at 608 N. Main St. The camp fee will be $275, and includes registration and materials. Scholarships are available.

Boys & Girls Club
The "BE GREAT" Youth Development Program at the Woodland Park and Eastwood Meadows units of the Alachua County Boys & Girls Club will be held at Woodland Park at 1900 SE 4th St.
The program, which is available for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, will run from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday June 10-Aug. 14. Camp fees will be $25 per week for the first child and $15 per week for each additional family member. Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-serve basis with early registration ending on June 3.
Those who are not members of the Boys and Girls Club also must pay a $60 membership fee or $90 for the entire family. For children living in public housing, the membersship fee is $5. Campers will receive lunch and a snack each day. They also will receive FCAT preparation classes, swimming at Mickle Pool at the T.B. McPherson Recreation Center and fun themes to expose students to other cultures.

The Upper Room Church of God in Christ UR Fun! camp, which is available to children ages 5-17, will feature daily themes and will include camp skits, movie day, puppeteering, favorite animals, favorite Bible characters, talent, water fun, kids kitchen, art expo, science adventure and field trips. The camp will be offered from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday June 10-Aug. 2 at Upper Room at 3575 NE 15th St. Camp fees will be $75 per week and $50 per week for children who are on free or reduced lunch. Documentation must be provided.
Youth in the eighth through 12th grade may qualify to enter the UR Youth Leadership program, where they will work with the younger campers.
