ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia scored multiple runs in three different innings to defeat Florida, 9-2, to claim the weekend series between the SEC Eastern Division rivals Saturday.
The Bulldogs (21-32, 7-20 SEC) used a 14-hit surge and three home runs to subdue the Gators (29-27, 14-16 SEC) in the teams' regular-season finale.
UF earned the eighth seed for the SEC Tournament and will begin play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Hoover, Ala., against ninth-seeded Texas A&M (30-25, 13-16).
Georgia used four straight hits in the second frame to build a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore Justin Bryan (2-for-4, three RBI, two runs) doubled in a run and later scored on Nelson Ward's single. Curt Powell's double accounted for the inning's other run.
The Gators countered with a pair of runs on three hits in the third to pull within 3-2. Freshman Brady Roberson drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a grounder by senior Cody Dent and went to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Richie Martin put the Gators on the scoreboard with an RBI single and took second on a wild pitch before sophomore Casey Turgeon roped a single up the middle that narrowed the gap to 3-2.
The Bulldogs pulled away after that. Florida had four pitchers give up at least one run, with starter Eric Hanhold (0-4) making his exit after just two innings.
