5 things of note in area sports

-For those who would like to see former Gainesville QB Mark Cato possibly in action in his first year at Florida Tech, some good news. CBS Sports Network will broadcast the Panthers' first Gulf Coast South Conference game against West Alabama on Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. Cato, a two-time first-team all-area performer, helped GHS to its first state title game in 32 years.

-A year ago, Spruce Creek's baseball team dominated the postseason, upsetting the nation's No. 1 team in Orlando Olympia en route to the Class 8A state title. The Hawks were ranked No. 1 nationally going into this season. But guess who will not be playing in the state tournament this year? Spruce Creek got knocked out in its district tournament. Locally, Union County, state champion in 1A, also was eliminated.

-On May 17, three area spring football games will be played. Fort White, which is moving up to 4A in a competitive District 2 that includes Madison County, Taylor County and Fernandina Beach, will play at 6A Columbia. Also scheduled is Brandon Faith Baptist Christian at Chiefland and Oak Hall and St. Francis at Tallahassee John Paul II. All games start at 7 p.m. More spring games will take place the following week.

-John Trimble of Gainesville is trying to recruit boys and girls interested in water polo between the ages of 14 and 18. There are free tryouts at the Northeast Pool in Gainesville on Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1-3 p.m. The pool is located at 1100 NE 14th Street. For more information, contact Trimble at (556) 596-6470 or email him at johnctrimble@gmail.com

-Taylor Bowen of Polk State College, a standout softball pitcher at Santa Fe, was named first-team Suncoast Conference and FCSAA all-state second team. The right-hander was 16-10 this season with a 1.17 ERA.
