A man was shot and killed by Columbia County sheriff's deputies late Wednesday night after he fired a shotgun at them outside a Lake City home, the deputies said.
Sgt. Ed Seifert said the name of the man is not being released until a positive identification is made by the state medical examiner.
The incident happened about 11:50 p.m. when deputies with the Columbia County Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force were conducting a narcotics investigation at 611 NW Bronco Terrace.
Several deputies were on scene and tried to contact whoever was in the home. Seifert said a man came out of the house with a shotgun.
Deputies ordered him to drop it, but he instead fired at the deputies, Seifert said. The deputies returned fire and fatally shot the man, Seifert added.
Seifert could not say how many shots the man fired at deputies, how many shots deputies fired or how many deputies fired shots. It could not be learned if the deputies were shielded in some way when the man fired at them.
"There were a lot of deputies there," Seifert said. "There is a lot of information that I can't share or that I just don't know."
The man died at the scene. No one else was injured. Seifert said no one was taken into custody.
The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident.
