Baseball regional semifinals previews

Regional semifinals

Class 4A-Region 2

Who: Williston (20-5) at Ocala Trinity Catholic (18-9)

How they got here: Williston def. South Sumter 2-0 in last week's regional quarterfinals; Trinity Catholic def. Fort White 2-1 in 13 innings

What's next: Winner will play at Orlando Bishop Moore or Satellite in Friday's regional finals.

Extra bases: The Red Devils are in their second straight regional semifinal and fifth time in the last eight years. Last year Williston reached the regional finals for the first time in 89 years. The host Celtics, coached by former Gator pitcher Tommy Bond, are in their first regional semifinal since 2010. Trinity Catholic has played for two state titles since 2004, losing both, the last in 2009 (3A). These two teams faced each other twice during the regular season, with the Celtics winning both times (3-2, 4-2).

Class 1A-Region 3

Who: Hamilton County (7-11) at Trenton (23-1)

How they got here: Trenton def. Bronson 9-0 in District 6 final; Hamilton County lost to Melody County 11-0 in the District 5 final.

What's next: Trenton would host Melody Christian or Bronson in Friday's regional final; Hamilton County would travel to either school.

Extra bases: Despite their great regular-season record, the host Tigers have lost their last four playoff games, including last year's 3-1 home setback to Lafayette. The last time Trenton has reached the regional finals was in 1995. The visiting Trojans are in the playoffs for the first time since 2011 and are looking for their first postseason win since 2002.

Who: Bronson (13-10) at Melody Christian (9-9), 4 p.m.

How they got here: Bronson lost to Trenton 9-0 in the District 6 final; Melody Christian won 11-0 over Hamilton County in the District 5 final.

What's next: Bronson would play at Trenton or host Hamilton County in Friday's regional final; Melody Christian would play at Trenton or host Hamilton County.

Extra bases: The visiting Eagles, in their first state playoff since 2002, are 0-4 in the postseason. The host Wildcats are in their third straight playoff and last reached the regional finals in 2011.

Class 1A-Region 4

Who: Pierson Taylor (20-6) at Chiefland (15-7)

How they got here: Chiefland def. Baldwin 12-2 in the District 7 final; Pierson Taylor lost to The Villages 5-3 in the District 8 final.

What's next: Chiefland would play at The Villages or host Baldwin in Friday's regional final; Taylor would travel to either school.

Extra bases: The host Indians are in their first playoff since 2011 and have won only three postseason games in 11 appearances, the last two years ago. The visiting Wildcats are in their first playoff since 2005 and haven't won a postseason game since 1982.
