Anna M. McDaniel, the associate dean for research at the Indiana University School of Nursing, has been named dean of the University of Florida College of Nursing.

McDaniel, who begins her position at UF this summer, has been on the faculty at Indiana University since 1992, where she has been a professor in the schools of nursing and informatics, and directed the graduate nursing informatics certificate program.

McDaniel also led the Center for Research and Scholarship, and her research focuses on using technology in cancer prevention and control. She is the principal investigator on a $3.2 million study by the National Cancer Institute on how technology can enhance telephone-based smoking cessation services.

UF Provost Joseph Glover said the university conducted an extensive national search of strong candidates before selecting McDaniel. “Dr. McDaniel's extensive experience as an educator and researcher will further advance the College of Nursing and the University of Florida,” Glover said, according to a UF news release Thursday.

McDaniel is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and serves on its expert panels on informatics and technology and health behavior. She is also a member of the American Medical Informatics Association, the Midwest Nursing Research Society and on the scientific review panel of Sigma Theta Tau International, the nursing honor society.

McDaniel said she was honored to be appointed dean at UF, according to the news release.

“This is an exciting but challenging time to lead the college as UF works to achieve its goal to become a top-10 public university,” she said.

UF also announced on Thursday that Dr. Daniel Connaughton will serve as the interim dean of the College of Health and Human Performance from May 10 to June 30.

Connaughton is currently UF's Interim Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professor and Interim Graduate Coordinator for the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management, according to a UF news release.

Connaughton succeeds Dr. Kelli Brown, who was interim dean for 8 months. Dr. Michael Reid takes over as dean of the college on July 1.
