A power failure occurred Tuesday morning at health science buildings at the University of Florida, leaving three buildings without power for six minutes, UF&Shands spokeswoman Rossana Passaniti said.

The outage, which happened around 10:15 am, affected the Communicore Building, the health center library, the dental building, and the Rabon Plant, was caused by engineers performing survey work, Passaniti said. An administration area near the food court inside of Shands hospital also was affected, she added.

“They accidentally tripped a breaker at one of our substations,” Passaniti said, adding: “They promptly worked to restore power throughout the buildings.”

The outage lasted 6 minutes. The only patients affected were those in the ENT (ear, nose and throat) clinic inside the dental building, Passaniti said. She added that critical care patients are not affected by power failures because they are in areas of the hospital that are covered by an emergency power system that keeps running when outages occur.
