Roundup: Suwannee, Lafayette notch regional semifinal wins

SUWANNEE — The Suwannee Bulldogs continued to move into uncharted territory in the Class 5A playoffs by winning their first regional semifinal in school history, a 5-0 victory over Panama City Rutherford.

Junior pitcher Audrey Bryant (5-1) tossed six scoreless innings for Suwannee and struck out two before being relieved by Haejin Choe.

A sophomore, Choe was also one of two Bulldogs with multiple hits after going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Senior shortstop Jessie TenBroeck — who leads the area in hits and steals — continued to make good contact on 3-for-4 hitting with two runs and a stolen base.

After taking a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, sophomore Timberly Steichen helped Suwannee cruise to the win with a three-run homer.

The Bulldogs (16-9) travel to play Ponte Vedra for Friday's Class 5A, Region 1 final at 7 p.m.

LAFAYETTE 11, HILLIARD 8: At Lafayette, the defending state champion Hornets rallied against the visiting Red Flashes to claim a berth in the Class 1A, Region 2 final.

After falling behind 5-0 early, Lafayette senior Lindsay O'Steen sparked a five-run fourth inning for Hornets with a bases-clearing hit. An inning later, Lafayette tacked on another three runs to secure the lead for good.

O'Steen, who also pitched for the Hornets, earned her 13th win of the season after pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts and 10 hits allowed.

Freshman Lacey Swafford led Lafayette at the plate on 3-for-4 hitting with two runs and an RBI.

The Hornets (19-5) will travel to Bell for Friday's regional final at 7 p.m.

BELL 20, LIVE OAK MELODY CHRISTIAN 3: At Bell, the Bulldogs scattered 14 hits in four innings to advance in their Class 1A, Region 2 semifinal.

Bell shortstop Katelyn Blong, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, was one of four multiple hitters for the Bulldogs. She also hit one of the Bell's two doubles.

Fellow sophomore Shelbie Hutto pitched all four innings, allowing five hits and no walks. After scoring two runs in the opening inning, Melody Christian's bats quieted as Hutto compiled seven strikeouts to extend her record to 12-4 this season.

The Bulldogs (16-11) host Lafayette in Friday's regional final at 7 p.m.

Suspended games

P.K. YONGE 3, OVIEDO THE MASTER'S ACADEMY 0: At The Master's Academy, the Blue Wave grabbed a three-run lead in the top of the first inning before Tuesday's Class 3A, Region 1 semifinal was suspended due to rain.

P.K. Yonge and The Master's Academy are set to continue their game today at 6:30 p.m. Blue Wave sophomore Nikki Santiago's first at-bat was interrupted with two outs and runners on second and third.

DIXIE COUNTY 0, PIERSON TAYLOR 0: At Pierson Taylor, the Class 1A, Region 4 semifinal was suspended until today at 7 p.m. due to rain.
