LAKELAND, Fla. — Officials say a 66-year-old man fell to his death while trimming a tree at his church.

Stephen Pederson volunteered to trim trees at All Faith Baptist Church near Lakeland on Saturday. Polk County Sheriff's officials say he apparently lost his footing as he was coming down after a limb he trimmed hit a power line. He fell about 20 feet.

Authorities say Pederson was initially conscious, but his condition continued to deteriorate after he was taken to the hospital.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports Pederson was a crossing guard at Combee Elementary School.

No further details were immediately available.
