Kindergarten roundup is Wednesday

Parents of students who will be entering kindergarten during the 2013-2014 school year are encouraged to attend the annual Alachua County Public Schools Kindergarten Roundup.

Students who will be 5 years old before Sept. 1 can register for the new school year at their zoned elementary school.

Jackie Johnson, spokesperson for the school district, said the roundup will be held at 3 p.m. May 1 at Duval, Lake Forest, Metcalfe and Rawlings elementary schools and 2 p.m. at other elementary schools in the county.

Alachua County Head Start students entering kindergarten this fall also must register.

Parents unable to attend the roundup can register their children anytime after May 1 at the child's zoned school in person or by calling the school and setting up an appointment.

Doris Ann Imler, elementary curriculum supervisor for Alachua County Public Schools, said registering during the roundup helps the school determine how many teachers and classrooms will be needed in the fall.

"We look at how many children register to determine how many teachers we need to hire and how many classes and supplies we need in place to service incoming kindergarten students," said Imler, who also recommends bringing the student to the roundup.

"The children can see their new school and become a little more familiar with the school," Imler said. "And in most schools, they get a snack and get to meet the kindergarten teachers."

At the roundup, individual schools will have additional information on such things as classes, activities, the lunch program, parent pick-up and school bus policies. Also, parents can make an appointment with the school principal to discuss any special concerns.

Parents who don't know where to register their children can get that information by calling the Alachua County Public Schools Zoning Department at 352-955-7700.

To register students, parents must bring the following:

— Child's birth certificate.

— Immunization records.

— Social Security card.

— Proof of a physical exam.

— Two different proofs of residency, such as a utility bill or lease agreement.

Last year, Imler said 1,911 kindergartners attended school in the district.

To help students and teachers navigate the first day of school, Imler said incoming kindergartners should know their full name and it's also helpful if they know their address and telephone number.

Most important, Imler said, is that the student listens and follows directions.

"Parents can help so much if they talk to their child and read to their child everyday," Imler said. "That will give them a great start."
