A Gainesville jazz hero

Gainesville jazz guitarist Marty Liquori will be honored as a 2013 Gainesville Jazz Hero on Thursday during a performance by his Jazztet at Leonardo’s 706. Liquori was selected for the honor because of his contributions to the music by the Jazz Journalists Association. At 8 p.m. Friday, Liquori will perform with Hot Club de Ville at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza in this week’s installment of the “Free Fridays” Concert Series.

The internationally renowned Joffrey Ballet makes a rare performance in Gainesville at the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall on Saturday.

FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT:

The Jest Fest! entertainment series at Bo Diddley Community Plaza closes Saturdays with a performance by The Flying Wallendas. Joining the famed aeriest troupe will be Gainesville magician Magic Mike.

MUSIC:

The Ninety Miles Project, featuring vibraphonist Stefon Harris, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and saxophonist David Sanchez, performs works recorded in Cuba with a Latin ensemble on Saturday at University Auditorium.
