The city of Gainesville is seeking volunteers to fill 29 vacancies on boards and committees.
The vacancies are spread across 11 boards. Most serve advisory roles. But decision-making boards such as the Board of Adjustment and the Code Enforcement Board also have vacancies.
At this point, the five-member Board of Adjustment has three vacancies and is in jeopardy of not being able to field a quorum. That board considers applications for variances to the land development code. Typically, the requests involve the setback distance from the property line for construction on single-family residential lots.
The seven-member Code Enforcement Board has two vacancies. That board makes decisions on alleged violations to the city’s code involving issues such as the condition of buildings, tree removal without a permit, overgrown lots and signage.
These boards have vacancies and require city residency as a condition of membership:
Board of Adjustment (3 vacancies)
Board of Trustees of the Consolidated Police Officers and Firefighters Retirement Plan (1)
Code Enforcement Board (2)
SHIP Affordable Housing Committee (4)
Student Community Relations Advisory Board (3 students; 1 post secondary administrator)
These boards have vacancies and do not require city residency:
City Beautification Board (3)
Early Learning Coalition of Alachua County (1)
Gainesville/Alachua County Cultural Affairs Board (2)
Gainesville Enterprise Zone Development Agency (4)
Nature Centers Commission (4)
Pension Review Committee (1)
Those interested in applying should go to the Clerk of the Commission office at City Hall, 200 E. University Ave. or call 334-5015 for more information. An application is also available online at www.cityofgainesville.org. Go to “Government” at the top of the home page and then click on Clerk of the Commission. Then go to advisory board and committees down the side of the page.
