Two Trenton residents were hospitalized with serious injuries late Friday afternoon when the driver lost control and smacked into two trees in Dixie County, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Hospitalized at Shands at the University of Florida were Eric Alan Burke, 27, and Jessica Elaine Laky, 22, FHP reported in a press release.

The accident happened at 5:05 p.m. on U.S. 19 just west of Dixie County Road 55A as Burke was driving a two-door Ford south in the inside lane.

FHP reported that Burke drifted onto the inside median, took evasive action by steering right and started rotating. The car crossed the southbound lanes, ran down an embankment and hit two trees.

Burke and Laky were flown by helicopter to Shands, the release states.
