Chris Baker resigned his position as head football coach at Newberry High School on Friday to take an assistant’s job at Tate High School in Pensacola.

“My wife has family there and it was the right time to make a move,” Baker said. “Newberry has been a great place for me, real special. A lot of good people, good community.”

Baker guided the Panthers to a 9-4 record and No. 5 ranking in Class 1A last season after losing to top-ranked Trenton in the state semifinals in his second year at the helm.

Newberry finished 2-8 in his first season after leaving Trenton, where he was the head coach from 2008-2010. Baker was defensive coordinator at Newberry from 2005-07.
