Flights impacted at Gainesville airport from American outage

American Airlines and its regional American Eagle flights were grounded Tuesday as a result of an outage to its reservation and booking system. Thousands of passengers were stranded at airports or on airplanes.
At Gainesville Regional Airport, a flight scheduled to depart for Miami at 1:10 p.m. with 27 passengers was grounded since the airline couldn't pull up the flight manifest, or passenger list, airport spokeswoman Laura Aguiar said.
Just after 4 p.m., the airline started rebooking flights to Wednesday for passengers who already had missed connections, she said, but still was not printing boarding passes nor had it scheduled takeoff.
She heard of passengers who decided instead to drive to Miami and others who booked flights on other airlines. Most decided to wait.
American asked the Federal Aviation Administration to halt its flights until 5 p.m. EDT. Flights into American's five biggest cities — New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami — were stopped until 5:30 p.m. EDT.
American said on its website that it would not charge passengers whose travel plans were flexible to change reservations and would provide full refunds to those whose plans were not flexible.
Flight-tracking service FlightAware estimated that about 900 flights would be delayed by 5 p.m. and that the cascading effect would cause another 800 delays Tuesday evening because planes and crews wouldn't be where they were needed.
American operates 3,500 daily flights worldwide.
