Some Gainesville residents will be baring their toes next week.

In support of TOMS national One Day Without Shoes event, people across the country will be shedding their shoes to raise awareness for the movement. The University of Florida TOMS Campus Club will be hosting UF's One Day Without Shoes in the Plaza of Americas on Tuesday from noon to 2 p.m.

“The point is just to show college students, because we kind of live in a bubble, that there are kids who walk around every single day without shoes. So it's a day where we can take off our shoes and be exposed to elements,” said Sam Wright, former president of the UF TOMS club and senior family, youth and community science major.

For every pair of shoes that gets purchased from TOMS, another pair is donated to a child in need.

The first 50 participants to show up at the event will receive a coupon for $5 off a pair of TOMS at Gifthorse in downtown Gainesville. They will also be raffling off a $50 gift certificate to the boutique and giving away BOGO coupons to Chipotle, said Emily Dhondt, president of the UF TOMS club and junior advertising major.

This is the group's second year putting on the event, and it is expecting a much greater turnout. While it's not an official UF organization, the TOMS club is hoping to become established in the fall after finding a faculty adviser.
