A carjacking Thursday night in Williston led to the arrest of a Gainesville man following a crash in Alachua County.
Jaakarri Middleton, 21, of 1441 SE Second St., was charged with carjacking with a firearm, grand theft, and fleeing and eluding, according to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began at 6:15 p.m. in Williston when police say Middleton and two other men approached a man who was with a woman in his pickup truck in a Williston motel parking lot. Middleton is accused of pulling a gun and demanding the truck.
Williston police reported that Middleton fled with the truck and was driving recklessly through town. They pursued him at first, but the chase was stopped because of the danger involved. The other suspected culprits left in different cars.
A short time later an accident was reported in Alachua County in the 5600 block of Southwest 62nd Avenue involving a pickup that fit the description of the stolen truck. The driver had left the scene.
ASO reported that deputies spotted Middleton nearby, noting that he fit the description of the robber. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Alachua County jail, where he remained Friday in lieu of $35,000 bond.
