Police arrested a Gainesville man on Sunday who is accused of kicking in his ex-girlfriend’s door and subsequently punching and choking her.

Richard Tobias Goines, 22, is in custody at the Alachua County jail after a 30-minute standoff with police at the Village Green Apartments, 3101 NE 15th St.

The victim called police last Thursday after Goines allegedly kicked in her locked front door and began searching her desk drawers, according to a GPD police report. The victim stated that she acted like she was calling the police when Goines began striking her in the head with a closed fist. Goines then choked the victim before fleeing the scene, police said.

According to the report, the victim had lumps on her head and cuts to her face and neck upon their arrival.

The victim spotted Goines on Sunday outside the apartment complex and immediately called the police. Goines ran inside one of the apartments upon spotting police officers, but he surrendered of his own free will after approximately 30 minutes, GPD said. After exiting the apartment, Goines gave officers an alias, but they were able to determine his true identity based on his tattoos and previous encounters with law enforcement, according to police.

Police said Goines denied the charges against him, allegedly stating “The door was already broke!”
