Former Orlando Dr. Phillips quarterback Chris Wilkes is walking on at Florida.
Wilkes signed with Ole Miss in 2008 but chose to play professional baseball after being selected by the San Diego Padres in the 22nd round of the Amateur Baseball Draft.
He pitched five years of minor league baseball before asking to be released from his contract with the Padres in March to pursue a football career.
The 6-foot-4, 235 pounder visited UF on Saturday and committed to the Gators following a meeting with the UF coaches.
“I met with them and made it official,” Wilkes wrote in a text message to The Sun. “I have school paid for by San Diego.”
Wilkes, who is 6-foot-4, 235 pounds and turns 24 in September, has four years of eligibility remaining and can play immediately.
