Two young women from Dixie County were injured -- one critically, the other seriously -- in a single-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon on U.S. 19 north of Old Town, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Heather Valentine, 29, of Cross City was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer south on Highway 19 at about 3:25 p.m. Saturday when the vehicle left the roadway on the right shoulder, at which point Valentine apparently overcorrected, causing the Explorer to cross both southbound lanes and overturn onto its side in the center median, FHP reported. The SUV then crossed both northbound lanes, overturning 2 1/2 more times before coming to a rest on its top, FHP said.

Valentine was critically injured in the accident, FHP said, while a passenger in the SUV, Faith M. Davis, 25, of Old Town was seriously injured. Both were transported to Shands at the University of Florida.

Valentine was charged with careless driving in the accident, while Davis was charged with not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.
