Suspect in robbery busted

A man suspected of trying to rob people at a North Main Street catering business early Friday morning was caught in part because several officers were in the area responding to a burglary alarm, police said.

Arrested was David Hord, 41, on two counts of robbery with a weapon and marijuana possession.

Gainesville Police Lt. Mike Schibuola said the robbery was reported at 1 a.m. at Celebration Cafe at 904 N. Main St. Four employees reported that a man with a knife came in and tried to rob them before fleeing, Schibuola said. Several officers were in the area responding to a burglary alarm at the nearby CVS Pharmacy and set up a perimeter.

Schibuola said officer Jeff Kerkau tracked a scent to a nearby home. Hord was spotted near the house and arrested. It was not determined if Hord had also triggered the CVS alarm.

GDP officer injured in two-car crash

A Gainesville police officer trying to catch a red-light runner was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries early Friday morning, police said.

Officer Steve Carter was westbound at 3400 W. University Ave. at 2:06 a.m. with his lights and sirens on when he was hit by another car that entered the intersection because the driver’s view was obscured by a stopped truck, according to a Gainesville Police Department report.

Carter was taken to Shands for treatment of injuries and later released. The other driver had minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital.
