An Ontario man died Wednesday night from injuries he sustained in a crash earlier in the afternoon along Interstate 75, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Edward Hodgins, 78, was a passenger in a 2002 Lincoln LS driven by his wife, Sylvia Hodgins, 78. Both are from Stratford, Ontario.

The couple was southbound in the left lane about a mile north of the Northwest 39th Avenue interchange at 3:30 p.m. when the car hydroplaned on the wet roadway.

The car crossed onto the west shoulder, overturned and struck a tree, coming to rest on its roof, the FHP reported.

Hodgins was extricated from the vehicle by Alachua County Fire Rescue. Husband and wife were taken to Shands at the University of Florida, where Hodgins was pronounced dead at 10:26 p.m. Sylvia Hodgins was in stable condition, according to the FHP.
