4 things of note in area sports

P.K. Yonge, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by Miracle Sports in softball, has won seven straight and 13 of its 17 wins (17-2) have been by shutout. The Blue Wave, who have had excellent pitching from Kalen McGill and Nikkia Robinson, as well as hitting from Katie O'Dell, face 6A No. 6 Columbia today in Lake City. Two weeks ago, P.K. Yonge blanked the Tigers 6-0, and have won its last three games by a combined score of 27-0.

The Rock boys basketball team (33-4) remains No. 10 nationally in MaxPreps Academy Top 10 basketball rankings, this not counting the Lions' two state tournament wins over Jacksonville's Potter House and Arlington Country Day.

Beginning tonight on ESPNU will be the National High School Invitational, which pits eight of the top high school boys basketball teams in the country. At 12 p.m. today, Pompano Beach Ely, which won the Class 7A title, takes on Prime Prep from Dallas. At 4 p.m., Montverde Academy, led by UF signee Kasey Hill, takes on Oak Hill Academy (Va.). At 6 p.m., the nation's No. 1 high school team, Findley Prep of Henderson, Nev., faces Montrose Christian from Rockville, Md. Semifinals are Friday on ESPN 2 at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m., with the final on Saturday on ESPN at 1 p.m.

An interesting trend that first started in Hillsborough County has spread to Pasco County and could affect other counties in the future. Paso is proposing to have a student-athlete who transfers from one school to another after his or her ninth grade for any reason would be unable to participate in sports until a seven-person committee approves the transfer. It is the latest move to combat the rapid increase in transfers over the years. Last July, when HB 1403 became state law it took some eligibility power away from the Florida High School Athletic Association, giving it instead to districts and private schools.
