Florida coach Will Muschamp said Tuesday that sophomore tailback Matt Jones was impressive in Saturday's scrimmage and is pulling away from his competition — junior Mack Brown and true freshman Kelvin Taylor.
“Yes, he's playing very well,” Muschamp said. “It's interesting. Our defensive guys, when we're in thud, which means you stay up and tackle but we don't pull to the ground, sometimes when we thud, they think they tackled him.
“When we're tackling, they don't tackle him.”
Muschamp said Brown, Taylor and walk-on Mark Herndon also have done some positive things.
“Mack Brown and Kelvin Taylor did some nice things (in the scrimmage),” he said. “Mark Herndon, the walk-on from Ocala, has really done a nice job for us on special teams and has become a dependable back.”
Muschamp also praised the scrimmage performance of starting quarterback Jeff Driskel.
“Jeff hit some vertical throws, especially in one-minute (drills) to win the game,” Muschamp said. “He hit a throw to Trey Burton to get the ball to midfield, then he threw a touchdown pass to (tight end) Kent Taylor over 40 yards, which is good to see — our offense moving the ball well.”
