Gainesville's boys tennis team won four of the five singles matches and both doubles matches to cruise to the District 5-3A title on Tuesday at Jonesville Tennis Center, the Hurricanes' third straight league championship.
Gainesville's top three single players — Zach Goldberg, Cole Fiegel and Peter Slaton — gave up just two games combined in posting straight-set victories. Jacob Gordon, at No. 4 singles, beat Mark DeBolt of Ocala Forest, 6-4, 6-2.
The ‘Canes, 14-0 during the regular season, are strong state contenders this season after finishing third a year ago.
“District is not as strong as it has been in the past,” said GHS boys coach Paul Spradling. “We are hoping the regional matches will be more challenging.”
GHS finished with 18 points, followed by Forest with 10 and Lecanto and Ocala Vanguard with 7 each.
The last time the Hurricanes went unbeaten in their regular season (20-0 in 1996) it won the 5A state title.
“We played some tougher competition this year, and I did that on purpose to get us ready for state-caliber kids,” Spradling said. “I have coached here 26 years, and it has been a while since we won state.”
In girls, Forest finished first, followed by Lecanto and Citrus. GHS finished in a tie for fourth with Ocala Vanguard.
