Police arrested a man Sunday afternoon after they said he grabbed a female cousin by the throat and lifted her off the ground at an Easter gathering in Waldo.

An officer responding to a disturbance call at the home on Northeast 147th Terrace around 2:20 p.m. found about 25 people at the holiday cookout, according to a Waldo Police Department report.

A woman told the officer that Robert Oran Smith, 43, of Waldo grabbed her by the throat after he grabbed some fish from a bucket and she called him a vulgar name, the report states.

None of the guests at the gathering said they had seen anything, the report noted.

The officer met with Smith a short time later at a gas station where he said the woman had spit in his face and he responded by grabbing her. Asked to describe how he had touched her, Smith said, “I grabbed her like a man shouldn’t grab a woman.’’

Smith was arrested on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation and taken to the Alachua County Jail.
