A child died and several other people were seriously injured when two cars collided head-on early Saturday morning in northeast Alachua County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Dead is Cristian Malave, 11, of College Point, N.Y. Taken to Shands at the University of Florida with critical injuries was Virginia Pagel, 52, of Keystone Heights.

Taken to Shands with serious injuries were Hilda Malave, 42; Carlos Malave, 42; Alyssa Malave, 14; and Melissa Malave, 19. All three are from College Point, FHP reported in a press release.

The accident happened about 6:20 a.m. on U.S. 301 just north of Alachua County Road 225 north of Waldo.

For an unknown reason, Pagel was headed southbound in a northbound lane of U.S. 301 in a 2004 Honda Accord, FHP stated. The Malaves were northbound in the left lane in a 2002 Mazda MPV.

The actions of Pagel caused her car to collide head-on with the Malaves' car, according to FHP.
