The Black Graduate Student Organization at the University of Florida is hosting a Black Body Image Forum on Tuesday that is open to the public.
Part of the BGSO’s Spring Week, which is being staged from April 2-6, the body image forum will feature professor Ken Nunn and Dr. Patricia Hilliard-Nunn as part of the discussion.
“Our Black Image Forum is a continuation of the discussions that organizations like the NAACP, the Black Women’s Image Initiative and Progressive Black Men have been having about black images, black relationships and social issues,” said Chestine Libema, co-chair for BGSO’s Spring Week.
The Black Body Image Forum will be staged starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Institute of Black Culture.
Spring Week will also feature a night of poetry featuring Tallahassee’s Black on Black Rhyme at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rion Ballroom at UF, a benefit kickball tournament on Saturday, April 6, at 9 a.m. at Forest Park, and the sixth annual MLK Prayer Breakfast sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Florida at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Best Western Plus Gateway Grand.
Black on Black Rhyme was invited to lead the open mic night because of the response the group received from its performance during BGSO’s MLK celebration in January, Libema said.
“Since so many people expressed how much they enjoyed Black on Black Rhyme, we decided to devote an evening to them and their talents,” Libema said.
The UF poetry collective Poets Inc. will also perform at the event.
