Red Robin now open at mall

Red Robin opened at 11 a.m. Monday on the north side of The Oaks Mall, according to a news release from Red Robin. Red Robin is a 40-year-old restaurant chain based out of Greenwood Village, Colo., that boasts a variety of burger toppings, endless steak fries and a signature drink, Freckled Lemonade.

During opening week, all proceeds from sales of Freckled Lemonade will go to Alex's Lemonade Stand, a nonprofit organization that raises money for pediatric cancer research.

Chomps

Bob D'Alessio and Brad Bedson opened Chomps March 1 at 5109 NW 39th Ave. Chomps is a sports bar with room to grow into a space for sit-down dining, banquets and wedding rehearsals.

D'Alessio has been in the restaurant business for 25 years, and both he and Bedson have been at Ballyhoo Grill for more than 10 years.

The restaurant, which takes over a location previously occupied by Joe's Place, offers not only traditional sports bar fare of burgers and wings, but also chicken picatta and filet mignon.

D'Alessio said he decided to have a soft opening, which was Feb. 22, to get a better feel for the market, because he had never opened a restaurant that far away from the UF campus.

The Yearling

Robert Blauer is selling The Yearling at 14531 E. County Road 325 in Cross Creek, which he has owned since 1996.

Blauer is asking $695,000 for the restaurant and $195,000 for the multiple rentals near the property, said Rick Cain, commercial Realtor at Coldwell Banker MM Parrish Realtors.

Cain said the business is doing well, but Blauer wants to sell to have more time for his true passion as an antiques dealer.

The Yearling has won the Golden Spoon award from Florida Trend Magazine and serves everything from quail to prime rib.

TownePlace Suites

The former Gainesville Hotel and Conference Center just west of Interstate 75 on Newberry Road is being demolished to make way for a TownePlace Suites by Marriott extended stay hotel with a restaurant outparcel fronting the road.

Development plans have not yet been submitted to the Alachua County Department of Growth Management, but Charlotte Smith said the hope is to have the hotel and restaurant open by football season.

Smith of Orlando-based BlueRock Real Estate Services is marketing the outparcel, which is being offered for $1.5 million. She said she is talking to several national restaurants, from fast food to "sit-down, have-a-beer restaurants."

The hotel is being developed by Gainesville Investment Lodging, a partnership formed by the Desai family of Sanford. Smith said they own other Marriott and Hilton hotels.

Gainesville Investment Lodging bought the hotel out of foreclosure in October 2012 for $1.05 million, 10 percent of the purchase price Keystone Gator Hotel Campus paid in 2006 before Everbank took possession in 2011.

The location, which is situated on Newberry Road between the interstate and Tower Road, was also previously the Holiday Inn West and was considered as transitional housing for homeless veterans in 2011 before that plan was dropped in the midst of a lawsuit from a nearby business.

Keystone also sold the adjacent hotel property closest to the interstate to Danly Group of Delray Beach in 2009 before CB&M Funding of Hollywood foreclosed on it in June 2011. CB&M continues to own that hotel, which operates as Hotel Oaks.

Beechler's

After 34 years in business, Beechler's Printing has been acquired by Jacksonville-based Raintree Graphics.

All 13 employees were offered positions with Raintree and some accepted, while some found other positions in Gainesville and another retired, according to Chris Beechler, who opened the business with his father, Cash Beechler, in 1979.

Raintree, which operates the Printing.com office at 720 W. University Ave., also purchased some of Beechler's equipment.

Chris Beechler, 65, said he was ready to retire.

The sale was completed Dec. 31. It took 10-12 weeks for Beechler's Printing to wind down and prepare its building at 350 NW 39th Ave. for sale or lease, Beechler said.

Cash and Chris Beechler came to Gainesville from Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1979 to open a franchise of Big Red Q Quickprint in an 800-square-foot spot at 2020 NW 6th St. After the franchisor went into bankruptcy, the print business became Beechler's and built a 5,000-square-foot building before purchasing the 21,000-square-foot building in 1088 at 350 NW 39th Ave.

The business was known as Beechler-Waters from 2004 to 2009 after merging with Printing Marketing-Direct Mail.

Beechler's handled commercial printing for small businesses, hospitals, banks, schools, colleges and government agencies, with 70 percent of its market within 30 miles of Gainesville, Beechler said. It also had a bulk mailing facility and bindery. At its peak around 2006, the business had 42 employees.

"I am looking forward to spending more time with family and friends and grandkids and doing what we do in the last semester of happy existence," Beechler said.
