Fla. firefighters save man from drowning

FORT LAUDERDALE — Fire Rescue officials have saved a man from drowning in a Fort Lauderdale lake.

Fort Lauderdale firefighters said they responded to call of a possible drowning Saturday morning and found a man in his 30s who had gone swimming and was in distress. Firefighters jumped in the water, swam out to the man and brought him back to shore. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

His name was not released.

According to statistics from the Florida Department of Health, 485 Florida residents drowned in 2009 and another 388 were hospitalized for non-fatal drowning.
