AUSTIN, Texas — Thursday was my first visit to the Frank Erwin Center, the basketball facility on the University of Texas campus. If this building is a Lexus, the O’Connell Center is a rusty Volkswagen.
It is huge and it is gorgeous. What was amazing to me is that it’s 35 years old. It looks like it was built 10 years ago. They’ve taken wonderful care of the building.
The chairbacks are all new, but there was a snafu when they arrived — they were Tennessee orange. So they were shipped back to the company and burnt orange seats were re-ordered.
It’s funny because Florida and Texas are considered two of the biggest athletic programs, especially in terms of revenue, in the nation. I know the O-Dome is supposed to get another renovation, but how much lipstick can you put on the building to make it great?
Now, having attended a game in the Texas football stadium, The Swamp blows it away. But basketball is another story. And yet, Texas was terrible this year and Florida won the SEC.
Anyway, looking forward to tonight’s games. It will be interesting to see how many people jump on the Northwestern State bandwagon because they want to see a 14 vs. 3 upset.
