The Gainesville Police Department arrested a man Thursday morning who police say was trying to open cars in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Marcus Hathorn, 28, was charged with three counts of attempted burglary of a car, said Lt. Jorge Campos.

Police were called to the Arlington Square apartments in downtown Gainesville at about 2:01 a.m. by a witness who reported seeing a man trying at least three car door handles in the parking lot, Campos said.

Police arrived and detained Hawthorne, who was identified by the witness.

Hathorn had been arrested in December on allegations he tried to steal a woman’s purse by grabbing and choking her. That case is still pending.
