Knowing how to negotiate accident settlements with insurance companies without involving lawyers can lead to claimants pocketing up to 25 percent to 35 percent more money, according to a Gainesville entrepreneur who owns an accident consulting business.
Trevis Prince, owner of BEEM Accident Consulting Firm, started the business after working as a claims adjuster for several years at Nationwide Insurance Co.
"We basically help people who have been in accidents to understand the whole claims process so they will be able to negotiate for themselves and keep more money in their pockets," said Prince, who decided on the name BEEM because it is like a balancing beam between insurance companies and lawyers.
He said he chose to spell it with two Es because it is easier for people to remember. "We provide them with information to help them decide if they want to get a lawyer or not, and most of the people we work with handle their own claims and come out really good."
He said the business deals with accident investigations, claims clarity, client empowerment, injury valuation, knowledge of claims adjustment and other issues.
Prince started the business last year after the idea lingered in his head for several years. "After I had been gone from Nationwide for some time, I woke up at 2:37 a.m. one morning, and something told me to get up and do it," said Prince, who graduated in 1996 from Riviera Beach Suncoast High School in Palm Beach County and in 2003 from the University of Florida with a degree in sports management and fitness.
"I got up and wrote the whole plan in a manner of about five hours, and I had the whole business model and everything ready to go in a week," he said. "After that, I got my first customer in May and since then, the business has been doing fairly well."
Prince said the most important part of what he does is provide customers with documents to look over and use as tools when dealing with insurance companies so they can become educated and knowledgeable about the claims process.
"We give them documents that help them respond to questions from insurance companies in a very professional way, and that is the essence of what we do. We help people deal with insurance companies in a professional way," said Prince, while emphasizing that he does not give any legal advice to customers. "We can't practice law, but we use our tools to educate people about the claims process."
Abija Bertrand of Gainesville said he is very satisfied with the services Prince provided to him. Bertrand said he got into an accident and didn't bother to file a claim until after a year had passed. He said he used BEEM after someone told him about Prince.
"He spoke to me and educated me on what to do," Bertrand said. "He helped me get what I was asking for from the insurance company by preparing me for what to expect during the process."
Bertrand also said he was impressed with Prince's integrity because he did not suggest he do anything unethical or shady.
"He is very honest, and I will highly recommend his services to anyone," Bertrand said.
Prince said it is important for people to understand what they are dealing with when they are negotiating with insurance companies. He said insurance can be difficult to understand because there are so many different types of coverages.
"If you don't deal with claims in the most professional manner possible, that is how adjusters are going to take you," Prince said. "It is important to be educated about the process, and we give you the education for self-representation."
