A Gainesville woman whose mother was brought to the hospital with open sores all over her body — some open to the bone and others covered with maggots or covered in feces — was arrested Thursday by the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.
Rena Susan Gullion, 45, was charged with abuse of the elderly and refusing medical care to a crime victim, according to an arrest report.
“It's hard for me to believe,” said sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey. “I can't see doing that to my mother. It shocks the conscience.”
The 79-year-old woman is now in rehabilitation and healing, Forgey said.
An investigation began on Jan. 6 when the woman was brought to Shands at the University of Florida via ambulance.
The arrest report states that the woman had open wounds on her arms, hips, groin and legs — including the entire back of her legs.
Bed sores on her calves had eroded to the point where bone was visible. Maggots were in numerous wounds. Most of the wounds were covered in dried feces, the report states.
Forgey said he believes Gullion was the only person who lived in the house with her mother.
Finding her mother unresponsive on Jan. 6, Gullion called a pastor to the house. The pastor, Forgey said, called 911.
Forgey said investigators have been piecing the case together since then, leading to the arrest of Gullion.
