Event raises funds for UF Schools of Music, Theatre and Dance

A joint fundraiser for the University of Florida’s College of Fine Arts offers a night of performance and pizzaz to raise money for students.

“Splendor in the Spring,” a benefit for UF’s School of Music and School of Theatre and Dance, returns Friday with performances of opera, musical theater and dance at the Nadine McGuire Theatre and Dance Pavilion.
The event is presented by UF Friends of Music and Friends of Theatre and Dance, which includes alumni, local businessmen and families dedicated to the educational programs in the respective schools. In the past, the two groups have held separate fundraisers, says Star Bradbury, public relations chairwoman of the board of directors for Friends of Theatre and Dance. This year, they worked together to raise as much money for scholarships and program support as possible.
“The more people that come, the more money we can raise, the more we can give to students,” Bradbury says.
That goal is $20,000, says Natalie Morrison, the coordinator of development programs and donor fulfillment for the fine arts college.

For event-goers, there’s a cash bar, silent auction bidding and hors d’oeuvres, with various perks from the event’s two ticket levels.
The Premium Ticket, which costs $150 per person or $250 per couple, has guests arriving at 6 p.m. and includes valet parking, a pre-show dinner with the directors and dean and first access to the silent auction. Celebration ticket buyers pay $40, arrive at 8 p.m. and have access to all the performances that follow including an after party with dancing, live jazz, entertainment and cash bar until 11 p.m.
Along with performances by UF students in the music, theater and dance programs, the evening will feature a guest performance by UF fine arts alumnus Malcolm Gets, a 1987 graduate and New York-based singer/dancer/actor known for his roles on the sitcom “Caroline in the City” and in such films as the film adaptation of “Sex in the City” and the 2009 film “Grey Gardens” with Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore.
“We are delighted to feature Malcolm,” says School of Theatre and Dance director Jerry Dickey. “It is a special treat and a tremendous inspiration for our students to perform with him on the Constans Theatre stage.”
