A Lake City man was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday evening when he lost control of his motorcycle.

Gabriel Merlin Kimble, 42, was taken to Shands at the University of Florida following the accident, which occurred at 6:36 p.m. on Lake Jeffery Road, the Florida Highway Patrol reported in a media release.

Kimble was driving a 2005 Kawasaki Ninja westbound on Lake Jeffery Road approaching the driveway of his home. As he applied the front brake, he lost control, fell on his left side and slid west on Lake Jeffery Road, FHP reported.

Kimble ended up in the eastbound lane of Lake Jeffery Road and was moved by family members into the westbound lane as a tractor-trailer rig approached from the west, FHP reported.

Kimble was flown by helicopter to Shands in critical condition, the release states. He was not wearing a helmet.
