Jail inmate assaulted officer, police report
An Alachua County jail officer suffered a fractured facial bone and other injuries when he was assaulted by an inmate with a history of assaulting authorities, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Timothy Wims, 24, of Gainesville, was charged with aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer in connection with the Wednesday incident, sheriff’s spokesman Art Forgey said.
Officer Lawrence O’Brien was hit multiple times in the face. He had a fracture extending from his nasal cavity to his left eye socket, cuts on his lips, a loose tooth and severe swelling, Forgey said. Forgey added that he did not know the circumstances that led to the incident.
Wims is in jail on a violation of probation charge. His original charge was battery of a police officer, firefighter or emergency medical technician.
Surveillance video shows Wims striking O’Brien with a fist multiple times until other staff members separated them, Forgey said.
O’Brien wants to press charges against Wims, Forgey added.

Maintenance man charged with sex assault on woman
An apartment complex maintenance man was arrested Wednesday night on a sexual assault charge on allegations that after being sent to a woman’s apartment to fix her blinds, he raped her while she was cooking lunch for her 3-year-old daughter.
Vernon Bernard Moss, 45, of 7210 SW 45th Place, was charged in the case, according to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office report.
The incident happened on Dec. 20 at the Verdant Cove apartments, 4260 SE 10th Place, according to the report. It states that Moss was in the woman’s apartment to fix her blinds and committed a sexual act on her while she was cooking in front of the child. Then he carried her into a bedroom, where more sexual acts were committed, the report states.
The woman later received a medical examination. Moss denied any contact with her but consented to a cheek swab for DNA. Results showed his DNA matched that collected during the woman’s exam, the report states.
